How to Check Your UAE Visa Status with GDRFA

The question clients ask us most often is deceptively simple: "can you just check my visa status?" It is a two-minute job when you know where to look — and a source of genuine panic when you don't. UAE entry and residence is governed by Federal Decree-Law No. 29 of 2021 on the Entry and Residence of Foreigners and its Executive Regulations under Cabinet Resolution No. 65 of 2022, but in day-to-day practice your status lives in one of two government systems, and a great deal of confusion comes from querying the wrong one.

GDRFA or ICP: which authority actually holds your file?

If your visa was issued in Dubai — whether by a mainland company, a free zone such as DMCC or DIFC, or a family sponsor resident in Dubai — your file sits with the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA Dubai). Visas issued in Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah sit with the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP). A pattern we see constantly in our PRO work is an employee with a Dubai free zone visa running a search on the ICP portal, getting "no data found", and concluding their residency has vanished. It hasn't — it was simply never in that database. The quickest tell is your visa file number: Dubai employment residence files typically begin with 201/, while Abu Dhabi files begin with 101/.

How to run the check

For Dubai files, use the GDRFA Dubai portal or the GDRFA Dubai smart app, which offers residency and entry permit status enquiries without needing an account for basic checks; the same services are surfaced in the Dubai Now app. For the other six emirates, use ICP Smart Services and look for the file validity service, which accepts either your passport information or your file number. The u.ae official portal maintains an overview of both routes if you are unsure which applies. Before you start, have three things to hand:

• Passport number and nationality, exactly as printed in the passport
• Your visa or residence file number, if you have it (it appears on the residence stamp or e-visa)
• Date of birth — a single digit out and the system returns nothing

When you should check — and why timing matters

We advise clients to run a check at four moments: before booking international travel, immediately after resigning or being notified of cancellation, after renewing a passport, and mid-way through any new application. The cancellation check is the one people skip, and it is the expensive one. Since February 2026 the UAE has applied a unified overstay fine of AED 50 per day, and grace periods after cancellation or expiry run from 30 days for standard employment residence up to 180 days for categories such as Golden Visa holders — our guide to Golden Visa requirements and costs covers who qualifies for the longer window.

A worked example from a situation we handle regularly: an employee's visa is cancelled on 10 March 2026 and she assumes, wrongly, that she has "a few months" to sort herself out. Her category carries a 30-day grace period, which ends on 9 April. When she finally checks her status on 21 April, she has been overstaying for 12 days — 12 days multiplied by AED 50 is AED 600, a bill that a free portal check in the first week of April would have reduced to nothing. Troubleshooting: the three snags we see most

A passport renewal has broken the link

Your residence is tied to the passport number it was issued against. Renew your passport and the portal may return "no record found" against the new number, even though your residency is perfectly valid. Run the check using the old passport details to confirm, then file a passport information amendment with GDRFA or ICP so the file follows the new document — leaving it unfixed causes problems at the airport, not just online.

The status is stuck on "under process"

In practice, the portal often shows "under process" while a medical fitness result or Emirates ID biometric appointment has not yet linked to the file, or while a routine security check completes. If nothing moves after five or so working days, chase it through an Amer centre in Dubai or the ICP call centre rather than resubmitting, which can create a duplicate transaction.

"No record found" on a valid visa

Nine times out of ten this is the wrong authority — a Dubai file queried on ICP or vice versa — or a transliteration mismatch in the name or date of birth.
